The Central Admissions Committee started meetings with preliminary discussions on preparations for the 2019/2020 admissions exercise, The exercise started with conduct of the Post UTME screening exercise. Previous post ME exercises in the university were conducted by either written or OMR machine marked tests which were characterized by many administrative bottlenecks and unwieldy crowds. The introduction of the CBT exams in the conduct of the post UTME resulted in a smooth exercise, More innovations will be introduced to ensure that screening of the admitted students will also be eased. The MIS has presented proposal for online screening of new intakes, this is expected to further improve the efficiency and timeliness of the process.

INTRODUCTION

The Vice Chancellor. Prof Shehu Alhaji Musa presented four names for the election of Deputy Vice Chancellors (Academies and Administration) The Senate, in April 2019, graciously approved the appointment of Prof. Aminu Umar Fagge as the new Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics. Consequent upon the election the two Deputy Vice Chancellors were confirmed by the Governing Council of the University on the 25 May 2019. The Vice Chancellor emphasized the need for innovations and adoption of best practices in service delivery

On assumption of duty, the new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) took charge of the various committees under his chairmanship as enshrined in the university law include These committees

1. Senate Business Committee (SBC)

2. Central Admissions Committee (CAC)

3. Central Accreditation Committee (CAC)

4. Academic Development Committee (ADC)

In addition, the Vice Chancellor saddled the DVC Academics with the responsibility of convening the Committee of Deans and Directors (CDD) All committees were convened and their operations were enhanced, rejuvenated and where necessary, modified.

Senate Business Committee (SBC)

The SBC, being the clearing house in examining all submissions going to the Senate, operates by receiving hard copies of results and submissions from faculties. directorates, departments and other units of the University for processing and onward submission to the senate. These submissions involved printing and photocopying of large volumes of documents such as results (first and second semester), memos to the Senate and other documents. The process was modified to the more convenient and more cost effects of presenting results to the SBC as the submission of only five hard copies modifications ensured timely deliberations at the Senate and it saved costs.

Central Accreditation Committee (CAC)

During the period under review, the CAC who successful professional ordination of the Faculty of Engineering by COREN The committee is currently preparing for the resource verification visit by NUC for the sixteen new programs recently introduced. The visit is expected in March 2020. The University is also expecting the professional accreditation visit by the National Institute for Architecture (NIA) and the (NIAS).

Academic Development Committee (ADC) The ADC, in the period under review, considered and recommended splitting of the Department of Forestry Fisheries and Wildlife into two separate departments and programmes These are:

1. Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management.

2. Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

The ADC also considered and recommended the establishment of Meteorology program under the Department of Geography. The Senate has sin approved all the programmes recommended by the ADC

Major Achievements

  • Timely commencement of the Second Semester 2018 2019 Lecturers
  • Facilitation of Bilateral Phd. /M.Sc. Academic Staff Training in France.
  • Implementation of the developed proposal on the creation of the Directorate for Examination Admissions and Record (DEAR).
  • Facilitation of the development of a comprehensive proposal through Smile Business Committee (SBC) on H readmission and stepdown of withdrawn level 200 and 300 students in the 2017/2018 session and the proposal was adopted by the Senate and subsequently implemented by the University management.
  • Facilitation of the implementation of Senate resolutions on residency period to allow spill over II students who have exhausted their residency period to register and complete their studies as the case may be.
  • Facilitation of the development of a proposal for the review of faculty departmental and association registration fees to be in tandem with their needs to effectively carry out their activities and the proposal was adopted by the Senate and as well implemented by the University management
  • Facilitation of the proposal through Directorate of Quality Assurance on improvement in Continuous Assessment in the University and the proposal was approved by the Senate.
  • Facilitation of the implementation of proposal for new format of presentation of results and other memoranda to senate which was earlier approved by the Senate.
  • Facilitation of the development of proposal on automation software modules for admission, examinations, results processing, hostel allocation and payments and the proposal was adopted by the Senate.
  • Timely completion of Second Semester 2018/2019 Examination
  • Introduction of Examinations Coordination Committee.
  • Monitoring of Examinations.
  • Upgraded Academic Records Keeping and Examinations Results Processing Software
  • Internal Memoranda, proposals and letters issued to Departments, Faculties and other academic Units from the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics.
